Liverpool hero Mohamed Salah names the ‘best team in the Champions League’

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has named the ‘best team in Europe’ ahead of the second Champions League semi-final.

Inter Milan booked their place in the Champions League final with an incredible 7-6 aggregate victory over Barcelona.

Barca looked set to advance to the showpiece event at the Allianz Arena after coming from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 in the dying minutes.

But Inter scored a dramatic equaliser in normal time before netting an extra-time winner in one of the greatest Champions League ties in history.

Either PSG or Arsenal will join Barcelona in the final, with the French and English clubs meeting in Paris for their semi-final second leg on Wednesday night.

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain boast a 1-0 lead after they clinched a narrow victory at the Emirates Stadium last week.

Several pundits have given Arsenal hope of staging a comeback in the French capital but Salah has warned the Gunners that they will once again be coming up against the ‘best team in Europe’ in PSG.

PSG beat Aston Villa and Premier League champions Liverpool on route to the semi-finals, while they also thumped Manchester City in a mixed league phase.

Luis Enrique dominated Liverpool in the home leg but still travelled to Anfield trailing by one goal after Harvey Elliott snatched a late winner for the Reds.

But PSG sealed a 1-0 win of their own at Anfield and came out on top in the penalty shootout to keep their dreams alive of lifting a maiden Champions League trophy.

‘I have to be very honest, PSG were playing a very good game in the first leg,’ Salah told French outlet L’Equipe.

‘We were so lucky that Alisson had his best game in the club’s history probably. Then they came to Anfield. We were so unlucky because we hit the post two to three times.

‘That game was honestly 50/50 who deserved it more. No one could say. We played a very good second half. They played a very good first leg. Nobody here would say they deserved it 100 per cent.

‘It was their day and I shook their hands and said to their players after “congratulations, go and win” and that’s it. We faced the best team in Europe in that tie.’

Rooney urges Arsenal to ‘take opportunity’

Ex-England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes Arsenal can mount a comeback against PSG and says the Gunners have a big ‘opportunity’ to win their first Champions League.

‘It’s a big opportunity for PSG and Arsenal,’ he told Amazon Prime after watching Inter Milan’s thrilling victory over Barcelona.

‘I think it will be a tough game for Arsenal tomorrow but I think they’ve got a chance, they’ve got an opportunity.

‘I hope they go through because if they do they have a real chance of winning the competition obviously. I’m intrigued to watch it.’

Flick proud of Barcelona despite elimination

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, meanwhile, expressed his pride at his team after their heartbreaking semi-final defeat to Inter Milan.

‘I’m very disappointed that we’re out – but I’m not disappointed about the performance of my team. They tried everything,’ he said.

‘We’re out, but next year we’ll start again and we’ll make our fans, the club and everyone around us happy.

‘They [Inter] are a really good team, a strong team who defend well but also they have a really good striker.

‘In the second half we were really good. We gave everything but in the end it was like that and that’s what made me a bit sad.’

Jermaine Jenas backs Chelsea star to become ‘one of the best players on the planet’

Newcastle United v Manchester United - Premier League

Jermaine Jenas believes Chelsea have a player who can become ‘one of the best players on the planet’.

After briefly threatening to mount a Premier League title challenge, Chelsea have been forced to alter their expectations during a difficult second-half to the season.

Chelsea beat newly-crowned champions Liverpool 3-1 on Sunday but the victory only put the Blues level on points with fourth-placed Newcastle United as they chase Champions League qualification.

In a largely challenging season, even Cole Palmer’s form has suffered, with the England star going almost four months without a goal before his late penalty against Liverpool.

After ending his long wait for a goal, Palmer hit out at ‘trolls and idiots on social media’ in a surprisingly open interview on Sky Sports.

‘S*** happens,’ he said. ‘It gives me more fight to do well not just for myself, but for my team.

‘Social media nowadays is full of idiots, the trolls and whatever. I don’t pay any attention to that. To score today, I’m happy, but I’ve got to keep improving and try to reach new levels.

‘If you’re getting chances and not scoring… you’re letting your team down at the end of the day. I feel like I’m mentally strong anyway so whatever people say, it doesn’t bother me.

‘I’ve had it all the time growing up. I feel pride in helping the team and if I’m not doing that, I’m not happy. Today, I felt like myself.

‘I felt confident, I was trying things, first time passes, playing forward, playing free and when you have him [Moises Caicedo] next to you, it’s a dream.’

Ex-England midfielder Jenas ‘loved every word’ of Palmer’s interview and felt it was further proof that he can become one of the best players in the world.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a sensational first season at Stamford Bridge, his form earning him the PFA Young Player of the Year award and a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Chelsea spent £40m to sign Palmer from then-Premier League champions Manchester City and have tied the Euro 2024 final goalscorer to a contract until 2033 following his exploits in west London.

‘I loved every word of that interview, every single word of it,’ Jenas told talkSPORT. ‘He’s 22 and he’s been carrying that football club on his back this season.

‘I just think sometimes with players, a lot of the time you see these interviews and you get such a polished, load of rubbish after certain games. Sometimes you just want to know genuinely what’s going on.

‘I think with Cole Palmer, he had that bit of release that made you kind of realise that this kid cares, he wants to improve and he knows he hasn’t been as good as he should be.

‘That tells me he’s got everything it takes to go and be one of the best players on the planet at some point during his career.

‘That’s what the key is, realising you haven’t been good enough and he’s been putting things right to get himself back on the right track.’

Man Utd legend Gary Neville hails Cole Palmer

Manchester United legend Gary Neville described Palmer as the ‘best player on the pitch’ during Chelsea’s victory over Liverpool.

‘He’s the best player on the pitch by an absolute street,’ Neville said on Sky Sports commentary. ‘He’s been brilliant today, he really has.’

After naming Palmer as his Player of the Match, the ex-Manchester United and England defender added: ‘It’s been a brilliant performance from Palmer. He’s been a joy to watch.

‘He deserved that goal because he’s been the difference. A class act on the pitch throughout.’

West Ham set asking price for Arsenal and Liverpool to sign Mohammed Kudus

Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham this summer, according to reports.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for Kudus during previous windows and are set to revive their interest in the Ghana international.

Mikel Arteta is keen to add more creativity to his squad at the Emirates Stadium following another unsuccessful title challenge.

Nico Williams is believed to be Arteta’s top target for that position but a move for the Euro 2024 winner looks unlikely, leaving Arsenal looking elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.

talkSPORT say the Champions League semi-finalists are showing ‘fresh interest’ in Kudus and have added the Hammers star to their list of potential transfer targets for the summer.

While struggling for consistency, Kudus has produced some dazzling performances in east London following his £38m from Ajax in 2023.

Despite his glimpses of brilliance, West Ham are ready to cash in on Kudus as they look to raise some much-needed funds for Graham Potter’s transfer kitty.

The early optimism of Potter’s arrival has quickly evaporated, with West Ham just 17th in the Premier League with three games remaining.

Winning less than a quarter of their league games, West Ham may have still been in a relegation scrap had Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton all endured miserable seasons.

Potter wants West Ham to invest in his squad this summer and a potentially lucrative sale of Kudus would raise more money and make room for new additions.

According to the Daily Mail, Kudus’ West Ham contract contains an eye-watering £125m release clause for Saudi Arabian sides.

For Premier League clubs, the buyout clause sits at £85m and it is that figure that West Ham hope to reach this summer if they sell the Ghanaian.

That number would be beyond Arsenal and Liverpool, who have also been linked with a move, and West Ham will need to lower their expectations following Kudus’ inconsistent campaign.

Kudus has six goal involvements in the Premier League this season, a poor return for a player who contributed 14 goals in all competitions during his first season at the London Stadium.

After drawing 1-1 with London rivals Tottenham on Sunday, West Ham have gone eight matches without a win.

‘It’s easy to say the season’s done, we can’t get relegated and there’s nothing to play for,’ said Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen. ‘But this is a club that prides itself on hard work and passion.

‘There are three games left to go, and we’re all determined to go and win. Ultimately, this season we haven’t done enough as a group of players to be high enough in the table.

‘It’s self-pride to go out there every single week because the worst thing is to come out of a game and think you could’ve done more.

‘But I think talk is cheap, we have to show it. We know we should be in a better position and have done better.

‘But we’re here now, and it’s down to us to win those remaining three games. That’s got to be the mindset to play for this club.’

Chelsea make Alejandro Garnacho transfer decision as Manchester United set asking price

Tottenham Hotspur FC v Manchester United FC - Premier League

Chelsea are ready to revive their interest in Alejandro Garnacho this summer after Manchester United set their asking price for the winger.

The Blues expressed interest in signing Garnacho during the January transfer window but were unable to strike a deal with United.

Garnacho was one of United’s most exciting players just a years ago but his form has fallen away recently, hence the Manchester giants exploring the possibility of a sale.

The Red Devils were open to offers for Garnacho in January and will once again entertain bids this summer as they look to raise funds for Ruben Amorim’s transfer kitty.

Amorim wants to sign a new striker, midfielder and goalkeeper following a dismal start to his tenure but has been made aware that sales will first be necessary.

Manchester United are hoping to sell Marcus Rashford and Antony following their loan moves in January and have also put Garnacho up for sale.

Given the interest in Garnacho from the likes of Chelsea and Napoli, United want ‘at least £65m’ for the Argentine, according to the Daily Star.

Chelsea are interested in signing Garnacho (Picture: Getty)

It is claimed Garnacho himself is eyeing a summer move following a frustrating period under Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot-seat back in November.

Garnacho has often been benched by the ex-Sporting Lisbon manager and could find his game-time reduced further if Manchester United complete a £62.5m move for Matheus Cunha.

Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested in signing Cunha from Wolves but United are believed to be leading the transfer race.

Rio Ferdinand urges Man Utd not to sell Garnacho

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand does not want to see Garnacho leave Old Trafford and believes it would be a mistake to sell him.

‘When there’s space to run into, Alejandro Garnacho can be a real devastating threat,’ Ferdinand told TNT Sports.

‘Yes, he needs to work on that end product but he’s still a young and improving player so that will come. Stick with him. I believe Manchester United should stick with him.’

‘Right time’ for Garnacho to leave Man Utd?

But Bacary Sanga, the former Arsenal and Manchester City defender, reckons it is the ‘right time’ for Garnacho to find a new club.

‘I think it’s the right time for Alejandro Garnacho to move on,’ he recently said. ‘He started well but he is at a stage where he needs to be playing more consistently.

‘It doesn’t seem right for him to be at Manchester United. The defence is ageing – so maybe bring in more young and fresh players.’

Garnacho impressed in Manchester United defeat

Garnacho impressed in Manchester United’s 4-3 defeat to Brentford on Sunday with a goal and an assist.

United’s 16th league defeat of the season leaves them 15th in the Premier League with three games remaining.

Amorim’s side can, however, end a dismal campaign on a high by winning the Europa League and thus qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Manchester United beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final tie last week, with the return leg taking place at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Speaking after the Brentford defeat, Amorim said: ‘I think it’s stressful to lose games. [But] when we’re fighting for a title it’s not stressful.

‘I have no doubts that we are playing better and we are understanding the way we play, even in this context.

‘So we have to take all the hits in this moment. We are losing games in the Premier League, but we are fighting for the Europa League so we need to accept that and to think about Thursday now, which is the most important game for us.’

Wayne Rooney singled out one Chelsea defender for praise after Mohamed Salah was kept quiet in the Blues’ victory over Liverpool.

Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Enzo Maresca’s side in their first game since being crowned Premier League champions.

The Reds looked understandably off the pace a week on from celebrating a 20th English league title and it took Chelsea just three minutes to take the lead, Enzo Fernandez slotting home following a superb move involving Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto.

Chelsea doubled their lead with 20 minutes remaining when an attempted clearance from Virgil van Dijk hit Jarell Quansah and rebounded into his own net.

Van Dijk did get a goal back for the champions, rising well to head home from a corner, but Cole Palmer’s injury-time penalty sealed a huge win for Chelsea’s Champions League hopes.

Salah endured a surprisingly subdued afternoon at Stamford Bridge and Rooney felt that was down to a ‘really impressive’ performance from Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella.

Anfield hero Salah, who previously played for Chelsea, has enjoyed one of his best ever seasons – scoring 33 goals and making 23 assists in all competitions – but struggled to make an impact against his former club.

‘Salah can obviously hurt players if he faces you up but Cucurella didn’t let that happen. He kept winning the ball and driving forward, he didn’t really give Salah any joy.

‘Whoever wins that will be the one who makes it [into the Champions League positions]. I would put my money more so on Newcastle.

‘From their performances and from the way they look. They have won the League Cup this year and they have got tunnel vision.

‘With Chelsea, there are still quite a few questions. I don’t think they are strong enough defensively.’

Gary Neville makes PSG vs Arsenal prediction ahead of Champions League semi-final clash

Gary Neville has rated Arsenal’s chances of coming from behind to beat PSG and reach the Champions League final.

Arsenal travel to Paris on Wednesday night hoping to overturn a one-goal deficit and book their place in the 2025 Champions League final.

Mikel Arteta’s side eliminated European champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals but were second-best in the first leg of their semi-final tie with French champions PSG.

Both teams suffered defeats this weekend, Arsenal losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth and PSG losing by the same scoreline at Strasbourg.

Neville admits Arsenal’s loss was a ‘worry’ given the strong team Arteta selected but still ‘genuinely thinks’ the Gunners can go to PSG and keep their Champions League dream alive.

‘The worry for Arsenal is they played their strongest side [against Bournemouth] and still lost,’ the former Manchester United and England defender said on his Sky Sports podcast

Arsenal v PSG - UEFA Champions League semi-final

‘But I genuinely think Arsenal can do it. I think they can go to PSG and do it.

‘I went there with David Beckham once to watch Real Madrid play there and I saw them [PSG] get nervous.

‘There’s such an expectation around PSG winning the Champions League. It will be hostile for the first 20 mins and if they score it will continue to be hostile.

‘However, if you can get a goal – which Arsenal definitely can either from a set-piece or a counter-attack or a bit of brilliance – I think you can see and feel the mood changing in that stadium.

‘I think Arsenal are in with a shout this week. It’s a huge game for Arsenal, it’s a season-defining game and could be career-defining for some of the players if they come from behind to beat PSG.

‘Beating PSG and reaching the Champions League final would be an incredible achievement.’

Rio Ferdinand predicts Champions League finalists

Arsenal and PSG, both seeking their maiden Champions League trophy, will face either Barcelona or Inter Milan in the final on May 31.

Revealing his prediction for the Champions League final line-up, Neville’s former Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand said: ‘I’m going to go Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain.

‘If there is a team who can go to PSG and win it’s Arsenal. I don’t think it’s about ability at this stage, I think it’s about mentality and belief.

‘In Bukayo Saka they’ve got a matchwinner who can turn the game on its head. There’s positives there but if the mindset isn’t right, they will get smoked, I’m telling you.

‘The problem for Arsenal is PSG are a proper team, I don’t think they’re invincible but they’ve been the best team in the Champions League.

‘If you’re a football purist, you want the two most attacking and free teams in the final.

‘PSG and Barcelona are the two most attacking and free teams in terms of letting their attacking players just go.

‘I think that would make for an unbelievable spectacle and throw us into a different cycle where managers attack more.

‘Luis Enrique and Hansi Flick could be the managers to follow in terms of their philosophy instead of Pep Guardiola who has been great at it in a great era.’

Barcelona and Inter Milan played out a thrilling 3-3 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final in Spain.
