A lion statue that was reworked to match its twin which was smashed by a car, has been declared as so ugly by locals that a bag has been placed over its head.
The pair of two-tonne stone cats have stood at the entrance to Weelsby Woods in Grimsby since 1951.
Stonemasons repaired one of the statues that was knocked off its plinth by a car in 2023.
In a bid to make the pair match, the other unblemished lion was altered to closer resemble its twin.
But unimpressed residents wrapped the once majestic head in a ‘bag of shame’, comparing the recarved face to Coronation Street actress Ena Sharples and former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
Others wrote online that the reworked lion looked as if it was wearing a wig.
One commented: ‘Seriously… the work is embarrassing… another epic fail.’
Some suggested that the reworked faces were too caricatured and unrealistic
‘You think that looks good? You must be mad’, a resident wrote on Facebook.
The lions were first carved in 1876 for a home on Abbey Road and were relocated to the park after the land was donated to the town in the 1950s.
Locals raised more than £10,000 to repair the damaged lion, which was knocked from its pedestal in April 2023.
North East Lincolnshire Council funded the latest facelift of the intact lion, which was carried out by the same Lincoln stonemason who did the previous repair, BBC Look North reported.
Council bosses have insisted that the ‘finishing touches’ have yet to be added to the stone pair.
But not everyone agreed that the remodelled twin was a downgrade.
Councillor Harry Hudson insisted that the reworked statue looked ‘even better’ and said he was ‘elated’ the pair were both back on their pedestals and matching.
He added: ‘We’re thrilled to have been able to do this.’
