The UK must ‘push past’ the debate over whether AI will take people’s jobs, Keir Starmer has said, as he argued the tech is making us more human.
Businesses and industries across the country have been transformed by the technology, which can summarise vast documents and generate text or images in a matter of seconds.
While workers and unions have expressed concerns over the impact of the sweeping change, the Prime Minister has embraced it.
In a speech at London Tech Week this morning, Sir Keir recalled being ‘really struck’ by the impact AI is having on the war in Ukraine and pushing for it to be ‘hardwired’ into the recent Strategic Defence Review.
He said: ‘I’ve set the challenge to all of my teams: show me how they can use AI — not just in the output of government, not just in partnership with yourselves and others in the delivery of services — but also in the very way we do government.’
As an example, he spoke about a social worker he met in Downing Street who told him AI is ‘slashing her paperwork and her caseload’.

The PM said: ‘She could use AI and tech to help with the parts that could be done more quickly. And from that, I’ve always said: AI and tech make us more human.
‘It may sound like an odd thing to say, but it’s true—and we need to say it.
‘Because some people out there are sceptical. They worry about AI taking their jobs. But I know from audiences like this, this debate has been had many times. We need to push past it.’

AI is expected to form a central part of the spending review on Wednesday, when Chancellor Rachel Reeves will outline plans for government budgets over the next few years.
Departments will be encouraged to use the tech to slash costs and speed up work.
But it has also played a role behind the scenes of the review. In January, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones said a tool nicknamed ‘HMT GPT’ was being used to summarise spending bids from different departments.
Following a speech on AI from the Prime Minister that same month, Unite the Union general secretary Sharon Graham called for ‘proper protections from AI’s pitfalls’.
She said: ‘The introduction of AI in the workplace must be something that happens with workers and not to workers.
‘Government, employers, and unions all need to be working together to avoid the potential dangers of workplace AI.’

King Charles braved the rain in east London today visiting the city’s first ever SXSW festival.
The Kingdom Choir, who performed at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in 2018, sang to Charles while he toured the event in Shoreditch.
Charles kept himself dry holding an umbrella while meeting key figures in the creative arts and technology industries.
This week, London has been filled with thousands people attending SXSW, a conference that began in Texas but has evolved into a broader cultural festival.
The focal point of Charles’s was the immersive art installation, centred around sustainability, a subject which the King is passionate about.
The exhibit, made by London artist Damien Roach, is called Grounding. It utilises AI and data to transform landscape images, reflecting the natural world’s constant adaptation and evolution.

In a previous video address, Charles compared the rise of AI to the discovery of electricity, the splitting of the atom, and the creation of the internet.
He went on to meet speakers for a panel session called ‘Love the Earth’, before visiting Spitalfields to see an art exhibition from Caribbean artists, about British Art and Culture.

SXSW has been in full swing all week. SXSW CEO Max Alexander told Metro, one of the conference’s media partners, that attendees will witness a historic ‘love letter to London’.
Idris Elba, Katherine Ryan, Erykah Badu, Alice Glass, and Sophie Turner are among the many actors, musicians, creative minds, and pioneering entrepreneurs who will be giving talks and performances until Saturday.
Earlier this week, Sadiq Khan opened the inaugural London festival during a panel with Tania Bryer at The Truman Brewery.

Sir Elton John calls government ‘absolute losers’ and threatens to take them to court

Sir Elton John described the Government as ‘absolute losers’ and said he felt ‘incredibly betrayed’ amid calls for better copyright protection against AI.
The Rocket Man singer, 78, said he’s been left ‘very angry’ after calls to amend the Data (Use and Access) Bill to include greater copyright protections against artificial intelligence (AI) were resisted.
Earlier this week, the House of Lords supported an amendment designed to ensure copyright holders would have to give permission over whether their work was used, and in turn, see what aspects had been taken, by who and when.
MPs voted 297 to 168, majority 129, to disagree with this change on Wednesday evening, which means the stand-off between the two Houses over the wording of the Bill continues.
The Government has argued that some of the proposed amendments to the Bill pre-empt the results of its copyright and AI consultation, and it does not want to legislate in a ‘piecemeal’ fashion.

Sir Elton is among hundreds of creatives who have urged the Government to protect copyright law.
Speaking to the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Sir Elton said: ‘It’s criminal, in that I feel incredibly betrayed.
‘The House of Lords did a vote, and it was more than two to one in our favour, the Government just looked at it as if to say, “hmmm, well the old people… like me can afford it.”’
The singer said the Government was on track to ‘rob young people of their legacy and their income, it’s a criminal offence, I think.’
He added: ‘The government are just being absolute losers, and I’m very angry about it.’

Sir Elton also said he was prepared to take ministers to court, telling the programme: ‘We’ll fight it all the way.’
A Department for Science, Innovation and Technology spokesperson said: ‘The Data (Use and Access) Bill is focused on unlocking the secure and effective use of data for the public interest – boosting the economy by an estimated £10 billion over the course of the next 10 years to help deliver the growth which is fundamental to the government’s plan for change.
‘We want our creative industries and AI companies to flourish, which is why we have been separately consulting on a package of measures that we hope will work for both sectors.
‘We have always been clear that we will not rush into any decisions or bring forward any legislation until we are confident that we have a practical plan which delivers on each of our objectives.’

Currently, British songs, films, paintings and news articles are protected under UK copyright law but a recent Government consultation proposed that it could offer tech companies free access to British music, films, books and more in order to train generative models without permission or payment, with creators required to ‘opt-out’ if they do not want their work to be used.
In April, Elton made a triumphant return to stage after sharing an update on his deteriorating sight.

The music legend revealed he can’t read, watch TV, or see his boys play sports as his blindness takes a toll on his personal life.
Sir Elton is a proud dad to sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, who he shares with husband David Furnish, 62.
Last July, he contracted a severe eye infection that left him blind in his right eye, with ‘limited vision’ in his left.
Sir Elton spoke to The Times newspaper about his ailments.
He told the publication: ‘I can see you, but I can’t see TV; I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer.
‘And it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.’
On the effects the vision impairment has had, he added: ‘It’s distressing. You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have.
‘I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here [left eye], so you say to yourself, “Just get on with it”.’
