‘Malicious acts’ have been blamed for a major electricity outage across southern France on the last day of the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

Authorities have confirmed that the blackout in large parts of the French Riviera is not a technical failure – but the result of suspected sabotage.

The cause of the power cut, which began just after 10am (8am GMT), was a fire in a substation in the nearby village of Tanneron.

Police sources, who asked not to be named, told AFP this was probably an arson attack.

Grid operator RTE said 160,000 homes had been affected in Cannes and the surrounding area.

Although power has already been restored after the incident, the network remains fragile.

‘A major power outage is currently affecting the western Alpes-Maritimes region. RTE services are currently working to restore the situation,’ the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture stated.

Final day of festival disrupted

The ‘malicious’ act falls on the last day of Cannes Film Festival, just hours before the closing ceremony.

ALPES-MARITIMES, FRANCE - MAY 24: People wait on station after significant power outage is reported by local authorities in Alpes-Maritimes, including Cannes where the 78th Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place, in France on May 24, 2025. This incident follows a widespread blackout last month that left millions without electricity across Spain, Portugal, and multiple regions in France. The festival said it had ‘switched to an alternative electricity power supply, which enables us to maintain the events and screenings planned for today in normal conditions, including the closing ceremony’.

Morning screenings at the festival’s cinemas were also briefly interrupted while the supply switched over to generators.

Film critic Matthew Turner told Metro that smaller screening rooms, on the periphery of the festival, will be most affected.

He said some venues are located as far as 30 minutes by bus from the heart of the festival and attendees there will have their schedule impacted.

‘It is kind of business as usual in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès and chaos literally everywhere else,’ Matthew explained.

Trains cancelled and traffic in disarray

Traffic lights have been knocked out across Cannes causing snarls, while shops on one of the main streets had to close.

Multiple trains are delayed or even cancelled due to the power outage.

France’s national state-owned railway company, SNCF, posted an update on X: ‘Signal failure in Cannes.Traffic is disrupted in the direction of Grasse towards Antibes. Delays are to be expected.’
