A ‘peace bridge’ connecting Russia to America, worth £6 billion. This is the Kremlin’s latest moonshot, pitched directly to billionaire Elon Musk.
At the White House, Donald Trump appeared to hear about it for the first time – or at least did a convincing impression of it.
‘A tunnel from Russia to Alaska. That’s…interesting,’ the US president said, when asked about the idea by reporters during his meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.
Asking Zelensky about the cross-border project, he said: ‘What do you think of that, Mr President?… How do you like that idea?’
The Ukrainian leader – who has been combating Russia’s war for more than three years – appeared less than thrilled.
‘I’m not happy with this,’ he warned, eliciting a laugh from his host.
The proposal by Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin’s investment envoy and head of Russia’s RDIF sovereign wealth fund, would see a rail tunnel built under the Bering Strait that separates the Russian Far East from Alaska.
He suggested that linking the two nations would unlock joint exploration of natural resources and ‘symbolise unity’.

While plans for a bridge or a tunnel to cross the Bering Strait have been floated for decades, they have not generated much serious consideration because of the rocky relationship between the two superpowers.
In a post on X, the envoy claimed that the idea of a ‘peace bridge’ between Russia and Alaska dated back to the Cold War era.
Proposing that Musk is involved in the project with his company, Dmitriev said: ‘With modern @boringcompany technology this can become a Putin-Trump tunnel.’
There was no immediate public response from the Tesla and X CEO.
Beyond the tunnel itself, it would cost a huge sum to build and upgrade infrastructure on both sides of the strait. Chukotka’s existing roads and railways are sparse, at best.
In addition, Dmitriev suggested that the US could join Russia and China in joint ‘hydrocarbon projects in the Arctic,’ referring to expanded drilling for oil.
‘Certainly, Russia is eyeing the opportunity of joint Russia-China-US projects, including in the Arctic region, specifically in the energy sector,’ he said last month, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.
This comes as Trump said ‘great progress’ was made during a phone call with Putin, with the two agreeing to face-to-face talks in Hungary.
It was their first call since mid-August, with the Republican describing it as ‘very productive’, adding that teams from the US and Russia will meet next week.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk – once the darling duo of the Make America Great Again movement – shared a front row at Charlie Kirk’s memorial on Sunday.
Let’s just say it was not exactly a bromance revival.
After their relationship imploded in public view on X and TruthSocial, with the Tesla CEO reuniting conspiracy theories about the US president’s links to Jeffrey Epstein – the final nail in the coffin – the pair have not been seen together since June.
Cameras captured the their brief handshake and nods at Saturday’s service in Glendale, Arizona, where more than 60,000 people gathered to pay their respects to the far-right activist, who was assassinated on September 10.
Footage of the two was shared by the official White House account on X, which Musk owns.
Now, lip reader Nicola Hickling has revealed exactly what Trump and Musk said to each other.
She told the Daily Mail that the president turned to Musk to greet him and asked, ‘how are you doing’.
The businessman then appeared to shrug as Trump said: ‘So Elon, I have heard you wanted to chat.’

He then suggested, ‘Let’s try and work out how to get back on track.’
Musk responds by nodding his head. The president then hugs his hand and says: ‘I’ve missed you’.
Their conversation lasted only a few moments before Trump appeared to motion him away, and took to the stage to address the crowd.
On X afterward, Musk posted a picture of the two talking , with the caption ‘For Charlie.’

Meanwhile, the White House celebrated their reunion, captioning the post with a love-heart and handshake emoji.
Now, there is much speculation that the former allies may start working together again.
Musk donated more than $270 million to Trump’s presidential campaign, barnstorming key battleground states for the Republican.
After the election, he oversaw the launch of DOGE, a controversial initiative that eliminated thousands of government jobs deemed by the agency to be part of a pattern of waste, fraud and abuse.

But after 130 days as a ‘special government employee’ in the Oval Office, he was let go by the president, igniting their feud.
The fallout then played out over social media and saw Musk accuse the president of being named in the so-called ‘Epstein files’ – documents linked to the convicted sex offender.
And in July, Trump said he would ‘take a look’ at the idea of deporting Musk.

Elon Musk’s Starship finally launches on 10th attempt

It only took a handful of explosions – and the kind of budget that could bankroll a small nation – but on the 10th attempt, Elon Musk’s Starship finally launched.
SpaceX’s rocket – the billionaire’s big bet on colonising Mars – departed from south Texas at around 7.30pm local time on Tuesday, after a long year of crashes.
The giant 403-foot-tall system launched into orbit before deploying eight dummy satellites.
Parts of the engine appeared to explode at one stage, and flaps on the side of the rocket caught fire and swung from side-to-side.
Ignoring the mishaps, Musk posted on X: ‘Great work by the SpaceX team!!’
Much is riding on its success, particularly after three Starship launches ended in failure this year, and one rocket exploded on the launch pad in June.
Musk has previously said every Starship test flight costs between $50 million to $100 million (£37 million to £74 million), making a small dent into his fortune.
NASA picked Starship to put its first astronauts on the moon’s surface since the Apollo program.
And Musk sees Starship, designed to be fully reusable, as core to fulfilling his goal of routinely ferrying humans to Mars.
The CEO said on Monday on a SpaceX live strea: ‘There are thousands of engineering challenges that remain, for both the ship and the booster, but maybe the single biggest one is the reusable orbital heat shield.’
The mission concluded with a steady, engine-guided vertical landing on the Indian Ocean’s surface, west of Australia.
The Starship then toppled over before exploding into a giant fireball, an expected demise likely triggered by its flight termination system.
