A serial rapist who drugged his victims and hid a camera in a London Underground station toilet has pleaded guilty to 24 sex offences.
Chao Xu, 33, planted hidden cameras in an air freshener and was found with hundreds of ‘disturbing’ images and videos of women seemingly filmed without consent.
His committed sex crimes against at least 12 women between February 2022 and June 2025, Woolwich Crown Court heard.
Officers are now appealing for more victims to come forward as they believe his offending his more widespread.

Xu, who is from China but is believed to have been living in the UK since 2013, admitted four counts of rape, eight counts of assault by penetration, and four counts of sexual assault.
He also pleaded guilty to four counts of voyeurism, two counts of administering a substance with intent, and two counts of upskirting.
The rapist’s crimes were uncovered by the Met police after a networking event he held at one of his properties in Greenwich in June.
After a woman became unwell, he offered for her to stay before raping her several times, the police said.
They discovered he had drugged her with substances known to cause drowsiness and incapacitation.
Detective Chief Inspector Lewis Sanderson called Xu a ‘calculated prolific sex offender’ who has ‘preyed on unsuspecting women using cowardly methods’.

Xu pleaded not guilty to one charge of sexual assault and another of assault by penetration.
These charged were not taken forward and will now lie on file.
Xu now faces ‘a lengthy’ jail sentence according to the judge, with his sentencing hearing set for November 14.
Suzanne Crane, of the Crown Prosecution Service, added after the hearing: ‘Xu is a serious danger to women and the scale of his offending is such that without the brave testimony of victims, who came forward after realising what had happened to them, he may well have continued undetected.
‘From the outset, we worked closely with the police to build a strong case.
‘The evidence included disturbing images and videos recovered from Xu’s phone, hidden cameras, and substances commonly used to spike drinks found at his home.
‘This overwhelming evidence led to his guilty pleas today.’

Woman forced to flee tanning salon naked after bed exploded and started fire

A woman who was forced to flee a tanning salon naked after a fire said she was ‘lucky to be alive’ and had been left traumatised by the experience.
Elaine Lanigan, 63, had been enjoying her regular sunbed session at Ania’s beauty parlour in Wood Green when thick black smoke filled her booth, leaving her choking.
Desperate to escape the smoke-filled salon, she clambered out naked, not having time to dress properly or grab her handbag.
She ran onto the busy Wood Green High Street along with staff and other customers when there was an ‘explosion’ with images on social media showing a black cloud of smoke billowing into the road as naked Ms Lanigan struggles to cover herself.
Ms Lanigan, who lives in Wood Green, told Metro: ‘I was on the sunbed and then I could smell a strange smell like chemicals or plastic burning. I took the googles you wear on the sunbed off.
‘Then thick smoke started coming in, and I was choking. I knew I had to get out fast, I ran out, but the smoke was so thick. I was running for my life.
‘I was mostly naked but had to get out, so I ran into the street. It was pandemonium.
‘As we got out, there was a whoosh and like an explosion with a black cloud coming out of the salon.
‘It was busy on the road and I was trying to cover up how best I could. I realised that flats above the salon could have people in, so I banged on their door to warn them. I had to act to try to help others.
‘It was a nightmare I could have died.’
Dramatic footage on social media showed thick, black smoke billowing from the beauty parlour as staff and customers ran for cover.
Three people, including Ms Lanigan, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

She added: ‘My jewellery which has sentimental value was burned and I lost my bank cards and stuff.
‘But at least I’m alive. The emergency services were wonderful, and because I had no money or anything, the ambulance took me home.
When the fire started, I was in the booth, and no one knocked on the door to warn me.
‘I could have died there and then. I’ve been traumatised by the experience.’
Footage from the scene showed charred tanning booths and other equipment left outside the shuttered store.
The inside of the building is a burned-out shell with the melted remains of the sunbeds removed by firefighters and left on the street.
A second customer, a 42-year-old mother of two, told Metro: ‘I heard a woman screaming. Then I smelled something like burning rubber, then there was black smok,e and I was choking.
‘I got on my hands and knees and started to crawl towards the door, but I couldn’t see much. I was struggling to breath, it was like having a plastic bag over your head, it was awful, I thought I was going to die and never see my children again.
‘The electricity had gone, it was so dark. I saw a chink of light at the door, so I went for that. Elaine was outside, she helped me, and then there was an explosion and a whoosh followed by thick black smoke
‘It was my worst nightmare, I still have flashbacks, I’m struggling to get over it.’

A bus driver, who is a regular customer at the salon, heard a crackling noise from his sunbed, which was in a booth and got off to investigate before realising something was seriously wrong, the owner of the salon claimed.
Ragu Nad previously told Metro: ‘The guy is a bus driver, a regular here. He heard a noise like something in the electrics. He got off to have a look and realised it must be a fault but managed to get dressed before things got really serious.
‘Smoke started to come out, and then there was this explosion.
‘A woman who was naked had to run out like that.’
A friend of the bus driver told Metro: ‘He is okay, although he said his chest was tight, maybe from the smoke.’
Mr Nad, who has had the shop for 20 years, said the extent of the damage would force him to close for weeks. A new sunbed can cost £20,000, and the inside of the building is gutted.
He said his main concern was keeping his five staff employed and getting the salon running again.
He added: ‘The staff will have to be off for a while, but I’m dealing with the loss adjusters and insurers to try to get it sorted so they still have jobs.’
Wood Green High Road was closed near the Junction of Bounds Green Road after the blaze.
The shop remains closed.
A worker at a nearby pub told Metro: ‘It was utter carnage. There was so much smoke in the street, I was choking. It was really acrid. It was like watching the aftermath of a bomb going off. The people who came out of the building looked in shock.’

A fare-dodging student pleaded with ticket inspectors after being caught red-handed in London.
Almost £200 million was lost to fare evasion in the capital last year.
The sneaky practice is also causing a rift among Londoners as many spend a chunk of their wages on travel, while others avoid paying for tickets or push through barriers even in front of staff.
Another fare evader was caught in action at Clapham Junction.

The sting operation targeting freeriding passengers was captured on the upcoming episode of the Channel 5 series Fare Dodgers: At War With The Law.
Enforcement officers came across a young man at the south London station, where more than 4,000 notices for ticketless travel were issued last year, making it the top fare evasion hotspot on the South Western Railways network.
The man was stopped by enforcement officer Sam on the busy footbridge teeming with commuters, who claimed he had paid for a ticket.
He attempts to play time by saying his ‘phone’s a bit slow, bear with me.’
But when Sam checks the ticket, it appears to have been bought after his trip.

While fiddling with his phone, he had quickly bought a ticket for his travel after the journey.
When Sam asks the man ‘did you buy this one now,’ he says he ‘forgot to tap in’ before a back-and-forth exchange, with the man insisting he did ‘get on the train with it’ despite Sam showing him the ticket was bought at 4.13 – a minute before their conversation.

The man admits: ‘I just panicked. Is there another way to do this?’

While his address is being checked, the student tells Sam to ‘hurry up,’ and that he is ‘nervous, I can’t lie.’
He is asked to show something to verify his address or the ‘police will have to take over and they’ll have to verify you.’
Tube fare dodging at six-year high
Fare evasion cost TfL around £188 million in 2024/25, and £190 million the previous financial year.
This has gone up from around £130 million in 2022/23.
A total of 15,930 penalty fares were issued to passengers travelling on the Elizabeth line in 2024/25.
On the Elizabeth line, 3,751 fare dodgers were taken to court in 2024/25,while 4,063 people on the Tube and 3,044 people on the Overground were prosecuted.
Fare dodging prosecutions are at its highest since 2018/19.
The student says he will speak to the police before attempting to walk away, prompting Sam to tell him to ‘just wait here, buddy. Excuse me, excuse me, where are we going? No, no, just wait.’
In a last-ditch attempt to avoid the consequences, the man continues to insist to the police officer that he bought the ticket on the train.
Eventually, he says the address was for his parents, and that he didn’t want to cooperate for fear of a criminal record.

Becoming more panicked by every second, he says: ‘I’m so nervous, please. I don’t want to get a criminal record, genuinely. I study law at uni. Are you reporting me?’
Sam says: ‘You don’t need to panic. As I said, I’ve just got to do those steps. So just give me two seconds, I’ll finish off, and then we’ll work out what we’re going to do.’
‘I don’t fare evade, I do actually pay for trains,’ the man says.
After being told his case would be referred to the revenue team, he says: ‘I know what it means. It happened to my cousin, he got a criminal record, they took him to court. It’s going to happen to me. My life is finished.’
His case was closed in the end without going to court after he paid the fine, and he had no previous record of fare evasion.
Jack, another train enforcement officer, said after issuing a notice to a mum-of-three at Clapham: ‘There are offenders out there, but some people just can’t afford it, and I completely understand.’
The next episode of Fare Dodgers: At War With The Law is on Channel 5 on Monday, September 1 at 9pm
