Paul Scholes reveals ‘risky’ mistake Ruben Amorim has made at Manchester United

Paul Scholes fears Ruben Amorim will live to ‘regret’ a ‘risky’ decision he has made at Manchester United.

United’s Premier League struggles have continued since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot-seat back in November, with United just 15th in the table with three games remaining.

The dismal league form has led to suggestions that this Manchester United team is the ‘worst’ in history, with Amorim not shying away from criticising his and the side’s performances.

Despite slipping 24 points outside the Champions League places, United have managed to reach the Europa League final and are one game away from winning a major trophy and qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Scholes believes his former club have ‘sacrificed’ their Premier League campaign ‘for the sake of Champions League football next year’ but ‘does not agree’ with that strategy and fears it could backfire on Amorim.

‘Manchester United should be able to play in two or three competitions at once without sacrificing something, and they’ve clearly sacrificed the league,’ Scholes told TNT Sports.

‘I don’t like it and I don’t agree with it and I believe there has to be some sort of standards required in a Premier League team.

‘It’s almost as if they go into Premier League games and there’s an acceptance that they’re not going to win the game, which is madness.

‘I think the acceptance has come from everyone. I think it’s come from the manager even though he won’t admit it.

‘He’s not playing teams to win games of football in the league. I think even fans are thinking let’s get these league games out of the way because the league has been a disaster.

‘They’re probably thinking: “Play whoever you want, we don’t care”. There’s an acceptance to it which I think is wrong because the Premier League is your bread and butter.

‘But if you’re going to get Champions League football by winning the Europa League, it’ll all be forgotten, I hope.

‘There is that bad taste in your mouth that the Premier League form is so bad, and they might regret it next year.

‘I think the manager should be using this time to learn how to win games when you’re not playing that well, because it’s going to happen again next year.

‘I don’t think you can just switch a button next season and, all of a sudden, you’re going to see them play brilliantly in the league.

‘I think it’s quite risky sacrificing the Premier League for the sake of Champions League football next year.’

Manchester United have two more league games – against West Ham and Chelsea – before facing Tottenham in the Europa League final on May 21.

The Red Devils then conclude the 2024-25 campaign with a home game against Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

United reached the Europa League final with an impressive 7-1 aggregate semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao, while Spurs beat Bodo-Glimt comfortably over two legs.

Tottenham have already beaten Manchester United three times this season but Scholes still believes his former club will come out on top in the final.

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes reveals moment he knew Liverpool were Premier League title contenders

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has revealed the moment he knew Premier League champions Liverpool could win the title.

Liverpool joined arch-rivals United on 20 English league titles after thrashing Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s side only needed a point to clinch the title but ensured they became Premier League champions in style with an emphatic victory over struggling Spurs.

Liverpool have sat top of the Premier League since early November but Scholes thought the Reds had a ‘great chance’ of winning the title a couple of months before that.

It was in fact Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on September 1 that made Scholes begin to fear the title was heading to Anfield.

‘I actually thought Liverpool would have a chance of winning the league when I saw them playing at Old Trafford back in September,’ he told TNT Sports.

‘I know that Manchester United aren’t in the best shape, but I was really impressed by what I saw from Liverpool.

Liverpool FC v Tottenham Hotspur FC - Premier League

‘There are goals all over the team and I thought if Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson stayed fit, they’d stand a great chance.

‘Even though Alisson missed a few games, Van Dijk was still there and winning the league is an amazing achievement.

‘They probably haven’t been pushed with the likes of Manchester City not being great this year and with Arsenal drawing too many games.

‘But even if they were pushed, I still think they would’ve won the title and gone into another gear and although it was a bit quiet in the last five weeks or so with nobody chasing them.

‘In the end, it was quite easy, but it’s still an unbelievable achievement. They looked like the best team in the league for me. Nobody else got anywhere near them, so you have to admire them for that.

‘When I retired, Liverpool were only two league titles behind us, so you knew there was always a possibility of it happening, and the way things are now, you’d put money on Liverpool winning it again before United do.’

Liverpool, who finished third last season, have only lost twice in the Premier League this term and remain on course for more than 90 points.

The Reds chose not to make many new signings last summer but Scholes believes a couple of defensive reinforcements will be needed this time around.

‘I think they need to improve defensively,’ he said when asked which areas Liverpool need to strengthen.

‘Obviously if Trent goes, they might need cover for Conor Bradley. As good as Conor has done over the years, he does tend to pick injuries up.

‘They also might have an issue with the No. 2 goalkeeper if Caoimhin Kelleher leaves as well.

‘I think they need a left-back and although I think Andy Robertson has been brilliant for Liverpool, there were times this year where you thought that could be a weakness.

‘I think Slot would want a holding midfield player. I know Ryan Gravenberch has been very good but if he got injured, they’ll need some major back-up in there.

‘Also, I don’t think Federico Chiesa will be there next year so I think they might need at least two players up top although I do think they’ve got the best forwards in the league anyway.’

Paul Scholes reveals ‘worry’ as Man Utd close in on deal for Arsenal and Chelsea target

Paul Scholes has revealed his ‘worry’ as Manchester United close in on a summer transfer deal for Arsenal and Chelsea target Matheus Cunha.

United are believed to be leading the race to sign Cunha, 25, after opening talks with Wolves earlier this month.

Cunha has enjoyed three productive seasons at Molineux since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2023, scoring 17 goals this season for a team involved in a relegation scrap.

The Brazil international signed a new contract with Wolves in January but has a £62.5m release clause that can be activated this summer.

Arsenal and Chelsea expressed interest in signing Cunha during the January transfer window but Manchester United have moved ahead of their Premier League rivals and are confident of bringing him to Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim is desperate for reinforcements following a dismal start to his tenure and is a known admirer of Cunha.

Legendary midfielder Scholes also rates Cunha highly but ‘worries’ about where the Brazilian would play at United.

‘He looks like he’s got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants,’ the Manchester United legend told TNT Sports.

‘He knows that physically, his team are just not strong or quick enough, so Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he’s got quality with 15 league goals this season.

‘I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute. It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go.

AFC Bournemouth v Manchester United FC - Premier League

‘The quality of play right now is so poor. And with Cunha, is he a centre-forward or is he a wide player?

‘There’s no doubt that he has quality and of course, it would be nice to sign him, but I worry about where he fits in.

‘You can sign the best three players in the world, and I think they’ll struggle coming into this team at the minute, but they’ve got to start somewhere.’

Europa League will not save ‘disaster’ season for Man Utd

Scholes has described Manchester United’s form as ‘disastrous’ and says even winning the Europa League will not save their season.

United are just 14th in the Premier League with four league games remaining, having won just ten of their 34 matches.

The Red Devils have fared better in Europe and are preparing for a Europa League semi-final tie with Athletic Bilbao.

‘Manchester United have been a disaster in the Premier League this year,’ Scholes added. ‘It’s been really difficult to watch and again it was difficult once more against Bournemouth.

‘The Europa League has given them a little bit of life. Winning it will not save their season because the Premier League is your bread and butter and that’s where you’ll be judged, and I think Amorim knows that.

‘There’s a bit of light at the end of the tunnel with the Europa League for the fans especially. They’ve got a tough game against Athletic Club as they’re one of the better teams left in the competition.

‘I think being at home in the second leg helps them. If they were away in the second leg, I think they’d really struggle to get through, but if they can go over there and get a result, then the crowd at Old Trafford in that second leg can really get you through.

‘You wouldn’t be putting your money on them and calling them favourites to win it because of how inconsistent they are, but out of the four teams, they’ve got as good a chance as any of them.’

Manchester United are facing an Athletic Bilbao side sitting fourth in La Liga behind Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and leaders Barcelona.

United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham are involved in the other Europa League semi-final against Norwegian side Bodo-Glimt.
