Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City have not changed their playing style and has reiterated that Arsenal ‘were better’ in their 1-1 draw on Sunday.
City were accused of parking the bus against Mikel Arteta’s side at the Emirates Stadium last weekend as they registered just 32.8 per cent possession – the lowest of any side managed by Guardiola in a top-flight league game.
But Guardiola insists he has not radically altered City’s approach to games and believes Arsenal deserve more credit for putting his side on the back foot.
‘I said many times, I would say, jokes aside, for the fact that always when we won the Premier League, we were a boring team, right? So that’s why I said, ‘okay, I’m going to use counter-attacks more this season’. Maybe the players in the future can talk about how much I changed this season compared to the other ones,’ Guardiola said.
‘Maybe they are the most credible to talk about if really, really I changed the approach because they are in every meeting, they are in every game, they are in every post-meeting, post-game. You can ask them.

‘I think it’s completely the same, completely. What changed is the opponents play a different way, we are not able to do it better. I said after the game, Arsenal were better.
‘I don’t like to play in the way we played at Arsenal, but there are a lot of things I love it, I didn’t have in the past but I love it. And I said in this press conference but the way we want to play and sustaining that.

‘Always I believe when I started being a football player with Johan Cruyff and the teams make man-to-man, always said to me, ‘when you have the ball, Pep, as a holding midfielder, look [for] Romario, look up front.’
‘Why should I be close when that guy is being marked and this guy is being marked and this guy is being marked and this guy is being marked?! I have to play there [long]. Because there he’s one against one. You play, and it’s against one against one. And you want to play one against one Erling? Play one against one Erling. If you lose that duel, it will be a goal. We’ll see what happens, right?
‘So read that situation because before we have one more player to do the process and doing that. Against Napoli, we changed the way we play against Napoli? Three days later, we changed our way to play. I’m really good, changing absolutely everything in three days. I must be a really, really good manager.
‘Sometimes the opponents are good and create the challenges that you cannot handle and the other one. But since I retire in this club, or I retire, I would love to play in the way I want to play. Sometimes we are not able, sometimes we are not good, sometimes the opponent is better. But for one game it’s bad and saying that the team is going.
‘Yeah, I want to make the transition. When we defend deep, always I say, ‘when we defend deeper because they are better or we are s***, you can run, run, you can run on transition, run’. But it’s because we are there. But in the principles, I prefer to regain up the pitch, and make a lot of possession to de-structure the opponents, to try to punish them.
‘Always I’ve been like that and always I will be like that. If it doesn’t happen, I tell you what, it’s because we were bad, we were not good. Not because we want to do that. That is, I would say.’

Owen Hargreaves says Chelsea and Manchester United missed out on ‘the biggest Premier League transfer’

Owen Hargreaves believes Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma will eventually be regarded as the best Premier League signing of the summer transfer window.
Despite his stellar performances in the Champions League last season, Paris Saint-Germain opted to sell Donnarumma and sign Lucas Chevalier from Lille as their new first-choice goalkeeper.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United passed up the chance to sign the Italy international, leaving the path clear for Manchester City to complete a £26 million deal with PSG earlier this month.
The 26-year-old delivered an impressive display on his debut last weekend as City ran out 3-0 winners against United at the Etihad Stadium.
‘Donnarumma is a huge plus to them, he could turn out to be the biggest transfer of anybody,’ Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

‘I think he gives them stability in terms of those big moments, he can make saves. How he only cost £26m I’ll never know.

‘At 26 years old he won the Champions League, probably helped PSG win the Champions League with the big saves he made in all those games.
‘I really believe that could be one of the biggest signings of any team.
‘You look at Pep, everyone says, ‘he’s not a Pep keeper because he’s not great with his feet’, he’s good enough with his feet.
‘Everyone said Haaland wasn’t a Pep striker but that’s the cool think about Pep, Pep continues to evolve on what he needs.
‘He saw an option with the [James] Trafford situation not going his way, realised he had to do something and he did.
‘I think Donnarumma is one of the best without question. That save he made against Mbeumo at the Etihad, I don’t think any other goalkeeper in the league outside Alisson makes that save.’

Pep Guardiola makes Arsenal Champions League claim ahead of Man City clash

Pep Guardiola has described Arsenal as ‘the most solid team’ in Europe ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League clash on Sunday.
Both Arsenal and City head into the match at the Emirates Stadium this week off the back of wins in the Champions League as Mikel Arteta’s side sealed a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao, while Guardiola’s men beat Napoli 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
City have failed to beat Arsenal in their last four matches and were on the receiving end of a 5-1 hammering away to the Gunners in February.
Guardiola believes City made it ‘easy’ for Arsenal that day but has praised Arteta for building one of Europe’s toughest sides.
Asked if he has re-watched City’s heavy defeat at the Emirates from last season, Guardiola said: ‘The game last season we started like it happened many times last season, an Under-14 team, we gave away a thousand million goals. And after we were, during a lot of the time, pretty good considering how we was last season. And the last 15, 20 minutes was a disaster.

‘We forgot to do what we had to do, and everyone doing there, and after that Arsenal, it was easy for them.

‘Hopefully this season we can make a little bit more of a challenge in the last years, because Mikel is an extraordinary manager, and what they’ve done in increasing the squad in these four, five transfer windows.
‘It’s an unbelievable squad, and an unbelievable team – it’s one of the toughest opponents you can find right now in Europe.
‘And we’ll see what we have to do, and which players are fit, and we’ll try to compete and be a better team than what we was last season, especially in the last 20, 25 minutes.’
Guardiola also made a sarcastic reference to the criticism City have received during his time in the Premier League over their spending power and has suggests Liverpool and Arsenal are not given the same treatment.
When asked about Arsenal’s spend in the summer transfer window, Guardiola joked: ‘It is what it is, they decided to do it. Only I want to say to my friend, Mikel Arteta, if he wins the title it will just be because of spending, not because he worked a lot.
‘Like Liverpool… If Arne [Slot] wins again, it will be because he spent a lot of money, right? Because it’s not just Man City that it’s happened right? So, all of them.

‘Listen, for many, many years, every club can do whatever he wants. I know how we have been treated is completely different but what he wants to spend is because he wants it, and it’s fine.
‘Then only thing I can say is they have been wise, they spent what they believe they can do, to compete against the best teams in the Premier League, in Europe, and they reached that level.
‘So he found a team in that way, a club, and step by step, window by window, step by step, Arsenal is getting better.
‘So last season, in Europe, made an incredible step forward, and for me its the most solid team – they don’t make mistakes at the back, and it’s an incredibly solid team, they have pace up front, of course set pieces with Nico Jover – he was here – so in every department it’s… what a team, in every department.
‘But we know it. Every team is better, and better, and better and I know the quality that all of them have.’

‘Panic buy’ – Wayne Rooney questions two Manchester United transfer decisions

Wayne Rooney questioned two Manchester United transfer decisions after the humbling derby defeat to Manchester City.
Man City once again earned bragging rights over their local rivals on Sunday, beating United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Erling Haaland’s brace and a Phil Foden header.
While City produced the perfect response to the consecutive defeats they suffered before the international break, it was a case of more of the same for United who continue to struggle under Ruben Amorim.
Old Trafford legend Rooney was disappointed if not surprised by the Red Devils’ display and immediately questioned why United did not sign Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.
Donnarumma was linked with a move to Manchester United after being banished by PSG but ended up signing for their rivals Manchester City for just £26m.

The 26-year-old, already a Champions League and Euros winner, enjoyed a bright debut for City, keeping a clean sheet and producing one of the saves of the season so far to keep out Bryan Mbeumo’s well-struck volley.
Altay Bayindir continued in the United goal with Ruben Amorim resisting the temptation to immediately turn to £18m deadline-day signing Senne Lammens.

But Rooney says it is a ‘concern’ that Amorim did not feel able to throw Lammens straight in and has questioned whether the young Belgian, who joined from Royal Antwerp, was a ‘panic buy’.
‘That was a worry as well… you don’t know if that was a panic buy,’ Rooney said on his BBC podcast.
‘I’ll be honest I don’t know too much about the new goalkeeper, I don’t think many of us have seen much about him. I’ll obviously do some research and have a look.

‘But if you’re buying a new goalkeeper and he’s not ready to come in that’s a bit of a concern.
‘Obviously Donnarumma comes straight in and keeps a clean sheet. That’s the big difference and that was my point after the first game of the season when I said United should go and get Donnarumma.
‘Whether financially they could or he didn’t want to come on we don’t know but we’ve signed a new goalkeeper on potential, we’ve needed up with another project, and that’s always a bit of a risk.’

Manchester United’s derby defeat leaves them 14th in the Premier League – one place higher than they finished last season.
Discussing his former club’s form under Amorim, Rooney added: ‘I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be on the manager and the players.
‘But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we’re seeing things that will get results in the near future.
‘We’re seeing none of that, and it is very difficult. There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving.
‘You could hear the fans singing Amorim’s name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game.
‘You know the game is over and I think they were very disappointed in what they were seeing. It is hard to see how it continues.
‘What are the patterns? What are we seeing what might improve the team moving forward?’
