Enzo Maresca reveals Enzo Fernandez injury concern after Chelsea beat Nottingham Forest

Enzo Maresca has revealed that Enzo Fernandez is an early injury doubt for Chelsea’s Champions League game against Ajax on Wednesday.
Fernandez withdrew from international duty with Argentina last weekend due to a knee injury and was unable to take part in training after returning to Chelsea this week.
The 24-year-old was then left out of the matchday squad for Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
‘Enzo had small problem,’ Maresca said after Chelsea’s victory.
‘A small problem that at the moment we are not able to say if he can be available for Ajax or not.’

Maresca, meanwhile, made three substitutes at half time after a poor first-half display against Forest.
Romeo Lavia, Alejandro Garnacho and Andrey Santos were all replaced with Moises Caicedo, Jamie Gittens and Marc Guiu brought on.
Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto and Reece James all found the net in the second half to secure Chelsea’s 3-0 win.
‘I always try to do my best. Sometimes I’m wrong, sometimes I’m right. But in this moment, it’s more about protecting players. We already knew that Romeo [Lavia] was not going to play 90 minutes,’ Maresca said when asked about his three substitutions.
‘Romeo’s plan was 45 minutes. Moi [Caicedo] cannot play 90 minutes, so the decision was to start with Moi or start with Romeo. And Romeo needs confidence, he needs a boost, he needs to start the game. So that was the plan. Then Garna [Garnacho] did a fantastic game against Liverpool. So it was good to give him again the chance.
‘Jamie [Gittens] came on, he was okay. And I think Marc Guiu was good. But also we planned the game expecting them back four, not back five. I think back four with Joao Pedro at No.9 is better. With back five, Joao Pedro at No.9 is not… if you remember, West Ham away, back five, we played Liam Delap and Joao Pedro against a back five. So we expected them back four, but they were back five. And then after half-time, we changed.’

Liverpool receive major transfer boost after shock Crystal Palace announcement

Marc Guehi has told Crystal Palace he will not sign a new deal at the club.
England centre-back Guehi almost joined Liverpool on transfer deadline-day last month, but Palace pulled the plug at the last minute.
It meant the Eagles missed out on a sizeable fee and, with Guehi now in the final 12 months of his contract, boss Oliver Glasner has revealed the defender has already informed the club this will be his last season at Selhurst Park.
Glasner told reporters: ‘I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year.
‘The club wanted (him to stay). They offered Marc a new contract, but he said, ‘No, I want to make something different’, and that’s normal.

‘And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation. (What) is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.’
Guehi has played 167 times for Palace since he joined from Chelsea in 2021 and captained the club to FA Cup success in May.

The 25-year-old could be sold in January or leave on a free at the end of the season.
Guehi can agree a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January 1.
Slot, meanwhile, admits they are well aware of the scrutiny on his side after three successive defeats, but does not believe the players “wake up at night” worrying about it.
After reeling off seven straight wins, they then lost three times in the week before the international break.
Slot admits having almost two weeks without being able to work with his players has had positives and negatives, but as they seek to avoid losing four in a row for the first time since November 2014, he does not believe it is weighing heavily on his squad.

‘These players might need me – but I don’t think they need me – to tell them what has happened,’ he said ahead of the visit of arch-rivals Manchester United, against whom they are looking to set a club-record 10 matches without defeat.
‘Results don’t lie, if you lose three in a row we have to do better.
‘But I think these players that have experienced so many things don’t wake up at night thinking ‘Oh, we lost three times’.
‘We need to be aware of that and we are aware of that and we need to react to that, but we have to give the same reaction if we win three times in a row and Manchester United is on the fixture list.
‘But maybe if you lose three times you are hoping for that spark or that one or two per cent more, not only from us but from our fans on Sunday.’

Alejandro Garnacho makes Manchester United claim after Chelsea defeat at Old Trafford

Alejandro Garnacho believes Chelsea would have beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford if Robert Sanchez had not been sent off early on.
Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat to United last month in a game where they were reduced to 10 men following Sanchez’s red card in the fifth minute.
Casemiro was sent off for United in first half injury time but Chelsea were unable to recover from going two goals down in the opening 45 minutes.
Enzo Maresca’s side are now looking to build on their 2-1 win against Liverpool before the international break as they travel to Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Garnacho, who joined Stamford Bridge in a £40 million deal from United in the summer transfer window, believes Chelsea have suffered ‘bad luck’ with red cards this season and is confident his new side can challenge for trophies.

‘They may not have been winning games but they have good players and will want to win. We have to be ready.
‘We are in a good position in the league [five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal], especially after we had a little bit of bad luck with red cards.
‘For example, the game against Brighton, we should win that game. And the game at United, if we play 11 against 11, I feel we would be on top.
‘But we are okay. I think it’s important to build from the last win against Liverpool and try to win again to be up there.
‘I think we have a team that can fight in the league and for the rest of the trophies, and we want to try to win at least one trophy. Because of the moment of the team, of the club, I think we can fight for the big trophies. It’s the dream we have.’

Marco Silva hits back at Arsenal claim after Martin Odegaard injury

Fulham manager Marco Silva has dismissed suggestions that Arsenal will struggle due to injuries this season.
Mikel Arteta’s side travel to Craven Cottage for Saturday’s 5:30pm kick-off but will be without Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Fulham, meanwhile, have Rodrigo Muniz sidelined due to injury, while Raul Jimenez is also a doubt for the game against Arsenal.
However, Silva insists Arsenal can have no complaints over their lack of squad depth, even with several key players ruled out.
‘They don’t have Madueke, they have [Bukayo] Saka, it’s not bad, not bad at all,’ Silva said.

‘The other one you said was Havertz? They have [Viktor] Gyokeres who cost them £75m. I think it’s a waste of time if you’re going to compare.’

When it was suggested that Arsenal will also be without Odegaard, Silva replied: ‘They have Eze who is not bad too, I think you have to move on.’
Silva went on to add: ‘I think it’s clear, with the long-term injury of Gabriel Jesus last season, they didn’t have Havertz, without them it was more difficult. I saw them playing with another player there with Merino, Trossard.
‘They had this issue last season with Havertz and Jesus, what they did they saw it, analysed it and signed Gyokeres. Even with the injury to Havertz and Gabriel Jesus they are ready to start with a striker, and about Saka it’s more or less the same thing, with Odegaard it’s more or less the same thing.
‘I think they can adapt to these unfortunate moments that all the teams have, like we have right now, probably the worst in my time at the club because we never had both strikers out at the same time, they are showing they have the conditions to handle it and deal with it so the level does not drop.’

Silva also says he is unsurprised by the strong start Arsenal have made to the season as Arteta’s side sit a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
‘Looking at the last season, the way they increased their depth, in terms of quality, I think it’s clear for everyone,’ Silva said.
‘I gave you three examples, three who won’t be involved and the quality they are showing in other positions.
‘They are a very, very, very strong squad. I think it shows the way they started the season as well and the way they have been playing.
‘It’s not a surprise for anyone how solid they are, probably with one of the best partnerships in terms of central defenders in the Premier League and probably in Europe, and the quality around the place in their squad.
‘I don’t think it’s new. Last season they were very strong as well and two seasons ago as well. The reality is that recently they have been very tough to play against.’
