‘It’s crazy’ – Manchester United told they ‘cannot justify’ £65m transfer

William Gallas says Manchester United ‘cannot justify’ the transfer fee they paid for one of their key summer signings.
The struggling Premier League giants spent over £200m on new recruits over the summer, bringing the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to the club
The improved mood at Old Trafford over the summer has quickly disappeared during a poor start to the 2025-26 campaign.
Manchester United have won just two of their first six Premier League games to slip to 14th in the table and suffered an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town.
The poor run has led to huge scrutiny over Ruben Amorim’s future as manager and reports that United are beginning to lose faith in the 40-year-old, who replaced Erik ten Hag last November.

Gallas believes Manchester United ‘spent a lot of money’ in the summer without actually strengthening the team greatly.
The ex-Premier League defender has also suggested United paid an overinflated price for £65m summer signing Bryan Mbeumo, who joined from Brentford.

‘I think the problem is that I find it hard to understand what they did in the transfer window,’ Gallas told Gambling Zone.
‘They have Bryan Mbeumo, and the player is good enough for most sides, but I don’t know if you can justify that transfer fee.
‘They’ve spent an awful lot of money and not really changed too many of their first-choice XI.

‘We’re always talking about money these days, and I know the prices keep on rising every year, but come on. This seems crazy.’
Mbeumo has looked bright in his seven appearances for Manchester United but has only contributed one goal – which came against Grimsby – and is yet to provide any assists.
United’s miserable start to the season has left Gallas wondering whether Amorim will still be in charge by Christmas.

Manchester United’s board appear to be backing Amorim for now but their patience will be tested if results do not improve, starting with Saturday’s clash against Sunderland.
‘The problem for Ruben right now is that he looks like he’s struggling for the solution on the bench,’ added Gallas, who played for the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.
‘He looks like he’s trying to figure things out for the first time, trying to make them play better somehow. He looks lost.
‘I don’t think his body language and manner, his emotional response, gives a great impression to his players and the fans of Manchester United.
‘Looking at him, I don’t know if he will make it to Christmas, to be honest, because it feels like United are one defeat or one bad performance away from a crisis.’
While Manchester United were beaten by Brentford last time out, Sunderland continued their brilliant start to life back in the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
That was Sunderland’s third victory from six games and leaves Regis Le Bris’ side fifth in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s trip to Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney says Ruben Amorim would get ‘slaughtered’ at Manchester United for Arne Slot’s Liverpool decision

Wayne Rooney believes Arne Slot was lucky to avoid criticism after Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League this week.
Victor Osimhen’s penalty sealed the win for Galatasaray at RAMS Park while Slot delivered two major surprises with his line-up in Turkey as Dominik Szoboszlai started at right-back, while Jeremie Frimpong was preferred to Mohamed Salah on the right side of Liverpool’s attack.
The defeat leaves Liverpool outside of the top eight in the Champions League table and automatic qualification for the knockout phase could prove tricky as Slot’s side still have Real Madrid and Inter to play.
‘I thought they were really poor,’ Rooney said on the BBC’s ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’.
‘I think a worry for me would be them losing the game and it looked like, even with still quite a bit of time left to go, he’s just put every attacking player on the pitch and just said, ‘right, go and figure it out’.

‘It could’ve got a lot worse for Liverpool with the amount of times they’ve given the ball away at the back and losing it and getting broke on, and Alisson getting injured.
‘I think when you win the league, like Arne Slot did last season with Liverpool, then sometimes some of the decisions you make get overlooked.
‘His decision to play a midfield player at right-back and a right-back at right wing was… [pause] for instance, if that was Amorim at Manchester United, he’d get absolutely slaughtered.’
Liverpool are next in action in the Champions League on October 22 as they travel to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Paul Merson says £9m striker is ‘much better’ than Man Utd’s £74m signing Benjamin Sesko

Paul Merson is already questioning whether Benjamin Sesko will be a success at Manchester United following his £74m summer move to Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim was desperate to sign a new striker during the last transfer window to replace the struggling Rasmus Hojlund, who has since left to join Napoli.
Amorim’s first-choice target appeared to be his former Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres but United turned to Sesko after the Sweden international joined Arsenal.
Sesko, 22, is one of the most highly-rated young players in Europe, having scored 39 goals across his last two seasons at RB Leipzig.
The former Bundesliga star is yet to show that level of form at Old Trafford, however, scoring just one goal in his first seven appearances for the Red Devils.

Sesko has in fact only started half of United’s Premier League games as he gets up to speed with his new teammates and improves his fitness.
Merson is already concerned Sesko will be yet another Manchester United transfer flop and believes his service will be an issue in Amorim’s 4-3-3 system.

The Arsenal legend also claims Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta would have been a better signing as he is ‘much better’ than Sesko.
Mateta, who completed a £9m permanent move to Selhurst Park in 2022, has scored 32 Premier League goals since the start of the 2023-24 season.
‘Manchester United went out and signed the lad Sesko,’ Merson said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. ‘He’s never going to score a goal because no one is crossing it to him.

‘He’s got two players behind him [Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo] that play off the cuff. He’s never going to get balls in from wide so I feel sorry for him.
‘I said last season on transfer deadline day that Man United needed someone like Jean-Philippe Mateta. Big, strong, leads the line, he’s a threat and causes problems.
‘But they’re not going to buy him because he plays for Crystal Palace, he’s not fashionable enough.
‘But he’s a much better player than Sesko, much better. And he’s doing it in the Premier League week in week out. As a player you would love Mateta in your team.’
Sesko opened his account in the Premier League over the weekend but that was not enough to prevent Manchester United from falling to a 3-1 defeat to Brentford.
Amorim was hoping to win successive league games for the first time since replacing Erik ten Hag as manager but United returned to Old Trafford empty-handed.

Club legend Wayne Rooney admitted he had no faith in Amorim following the defeat, which leaves Manchester United 14th in the Premier League after six games.
‘I am not seeing anything which is giving me any confidence, there needs to be big changes in my opinion,’ Rooney said on his BBC podcast.
‘Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester United back. There needs to be a clear message from the owners.
‘Whether that is the Glazers, [minority owner] Sir Jim Ratcliffe, there has to be a message of where this club is going. At the minute we are all sitting there waiting for it to crumble.
‘The culture of that football club has gone. I see it on a daily basis. I see staff losing jobs, people walking out of jobs.
‘I’ve got two kids [in the academy] at that football club and I really hope this doesn’t affect what they’re doing. What I’m seeing at that football club is not Manchester United.’
Amorim’s side return to Premier League action on Saturday with a must-win match against newly-promoted Sunderland.

Arsenal and Chelsea legend linked with Man Utd job as Gareth Southgate makes decision

Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has been linked with the Manchester United job as Ruben Amorim fights to avoid the sack.
United were expected to improve this season after a productive summer transfer window in which the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko arrived at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils endured a disastrous 2024-25 campaign, finishing 15th in the Premier League and failing to qualify for European football after losing to Tottenham in a drab Europa League final.
United’s squad spoke positively over the summer and were glad to see some of Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ depart, including Antony and Alejandro Garnacho.
But that positive mood has disappeared in the space of just two months, with United winning only two of their first seven games of the season.

Poor Premier League form has left them 14th in the table while Amorim suffered a quite humiliating defeat in the Carabao Cup to League Two opponents Grimsby Town.
The Manchester United hierarchy appear ready to stick with Amorim for the time being but club legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt believe that could change if they fail to beat newly-promoted Sunderland on Saturday.

A number of managers have already begun to be linked with the Old Trafford job, with Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola believed to be admired by the Manchester giants.
Ex-England manager Gareth Southgate has also emerged as a possible candidate to replace Amorim, who won back-to-back league titles at former club Sporting.
Southgate was in charge of England for eight years and led the Three Lions to two major finals in that time, although fans remain disappointed that he was unable to end the nation’s wait for silverware.

While the 55-year-old has been out of football management since resigning in July 2024, Southgate would reject the chance to return to the fold with Manchester United.
The Daily Mirror say Southgate is keeping his options open – both within and outside of the world of football – but is in no rush to return to management.
Since stepping down as England boss, Southgate has taken part in speaking engagements and motivation events. He has also been seen at many football matches.

Southgate was heavily linked with the United job while Erik ten Hag was still in charge but made it clear he wanted to leave England into Euro 2024.
Ben Foster, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, has talked up Southgate’s suitability for the Old Trafford gig.
‘I just think with Gareth Southgate, it’s so different to what they’ve ever done, and what they’re doing isn’t working,’ he said on his YouTube channel.

‘You look at the past four or five managers now since Fergie went and they’re not working. It’s as simple as that.
‘I just think that with how hard it is to play for Man United and the pressure involved in pulling that shirt on, sometimes you might need a bit of a different approach.’
United have denied they have started planning for life after Amorim and are still, publicly at least, backing the 40-year-old Portuguese to turn things around.
But FourFourTwo claim another manager could be on their shortlist to replace Amorim in the form of Premier League legend Fabregas.
Fabregas, who played over 300 games for Arsenal and then won two Premier League titles at Chelsea, has impressed during his spell in charge of Italian side Como.
The ex-Spain and Barcelona star would be a controversial choice given his battles with Manchester United over the years.
Amorim, speaking after United’s latest defeat to Brentford, insisted he was ‘not concerned’ about his job.
‘I am never concerned about my job – I am not that kind of guy,’ he said. ‘It is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I am here.’
