A man has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to a café in Spain after staff refused to put mayonnaise on his sandwich.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening in the town of Los Palacios y Villafranca, in the province of Sevilla.

Footage released by the owners shows the moment he starts to douse the bar with petrol before lighting it up.

A ball of flames erupt just moments after, forcing customers including a number of young children and elderly fleeing for their safety.

In the commotion, the man also managed to set fire to his own left hand by mistake.

He is also seen rushing out the door and using his right hand in an attempt to stub out the flames.

It is alleged that the man stormed to a nearby petrol station after being refused mayonnaise twice.

He bought a litre and a half of petrol before returning to the café to cause £6,000 to £7,000 worth of damage.

Jose Antonio Caballero, owner of Las Postas Cafe-Bar where the incident occurred, described it as ‘something surreal’.

He told Spanish press: ‘First one waiter and then another the second time this gentleman asked for mayonnaise gave him the same answer which was that the bar didn’t have a kitchen and the sandwiches came ready-prepared and we didn’t have sauces.

‘At that moment he walked to the garage opposite, returned to the bar with a bottle in his hand which we discovered afterwards had petrol inside, and asked the first waiter: “Are you sure there’s no mayonnaise?” without giving him time to reply.’

Jose confirmed that no one was injured in the fire apart from the man.

Police were quickly on the scene, arresting the suspect and taking him to a health centre to be treated for burns.

He is now being held by the Guardia Civil and is due to appear in court later today.

The man has only been identified as a 50-year-old from the neighbouring province of Cordoba, but has not been named.
