At least six people have been killed in a mass shooting at a food market in Thailand.

The attack happened at Or Tor Kor – a market usually buzzing with tourists – in the Chatuchak district in northern Bangkok.

Shots rang out, sending crowds running for cover, as the assailant targeted people indiscriminately.

One market vendor and four security guards have been identified as some of the victims of the deadly attack.

Two injured women were rushed to hospital for treatment by paramedics at the scene.

Footage from CCTV at the market shows people crouching behind stalls to escape the bullets as multiple shots are heard in the background.

Another clip circulating online shows the apparent shooter charging down the street.

Carrying a backpack slung on his chest, he is seen what looks like a gun in his right hand.

A gunman has killed at least five people and injured two others during a rampage at a well-known tourist market in Thailand. The suspect opened fire among the stalls next to the Chatuchak Weekend Market in the capital, Bangkok, at around 12:30 pm local time. Officials said the shooting unfolded at a collection point for donations for residents evacuated from the clashes along the border with Cambodia. The suspect reportedly killed his former colleagues with a CZ Shadow II handgun before being seen walking through a car park. Police said he later shot himself and was found dead at the scene. Officials identified the shooter as a 61-year-old former security guard who worked in the area. They currently do not know the motive. Thailand's Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, confirmed the deaths of five people and injuries to two others. He said he was travelling to the site to closely follow the developments and oversee further investigation into the shooting. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is open to visitors from Friday to Sunday. Traders work during the week.

Local media identified him as a 61-year-old man from the Khong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

He is understood to be a former security guard and had previously worked at the same company as the three personnel who were shot to death.

After shooting multiple people, the suspect sat on a bench in the middle of the market before reportedly turning the weapon on himself.

His motive remains unclear but police have launched an investigation into the attack.
