Map shows where more facial recognition police vans are rolled out

Live facial recognition cameras will be rolled out in new areas across England as part of a crime crackdown.
A fleet of vans kitted with the facial recognition technology will be rolled out in seven new areas in the UK over the coming weeks.
The technology, which scans faces and compares them against a database of criminals and suspects of serious crimes, is already in use across London.
The Home Office announced the names of police forces where the technology will be deployed on the streets to catch ‘high-harm’ offenders.
Ten camera vans will soon patrol across Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Bedfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley and Hampshire.
Facial surveillance vans are already in use across the South Wales Police, Essex and Met Police areas.
The Home Office said the move would roughly double the number of facial recognition vans in use, but declined to confirm how many are currently used on UK streets.
Each police force will decide how and when the vans are used in their areas, with each van manned by a trained officer.
Current rules limit police use of facial recognition cameras.

The law only allows the checks to be done against police watchlists of wanted criminals, suspects and people on bail or court order conditions like sex offenders.
But this could change as the government is looking to consult on a new legal framework this autumn, including when and how the technology should be deployed.
Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, insisted that the vans will focus on sex offenders or ‘people wanted for the most serious crimes who the police have not been able to find.’
She said: ‘The algorithm being used in the vans has been independently tested and will only be operated in specific circumstances and with robust oversight.’

However, the facial recognition vans have been labelled as ‘dystopian’ by privacy campaigners.
There have been concerns that the cameras could mistake an innocent person for a criminal.
Rebecca Vincent, the interim director of Big Brother Watch, said: ‘This unprecedented escalation in the use of facial recognition technology across the UK is alarming, and represents a significant expansion of the surveillance state. Live facial recognition turns every passerby into a walking barcode and treats us all as a nation of suspects.
‘Police have interpreted the absence of any legislative basis authorising the use of this intrusive technology as carte blanche to continue to roll it out unfettered, despite the fact that a crucial judicial review on the matter is pending.

‘This move is not only worrying for our privacy rights, it is worrying for our democracy. The Home Office must scrap its plans to roll out further live facial recognition capacity until robust legislative safeguards are established.’
Chief Superintendent Tim Morgan from South Wales Police assured that the technology would be used ‘ethically’ and that police forces ‘spend time and effort making sure it’s deployed in line with al legislation and guidance.’
Alongside the new vans, the government also announced 13,000 more officers in communities by 2029.
How live facial recognition cameras work?
The process starts by identifying a face in a still image or video – picking out which pixels make up a face and which are the body, background or something else.
It then maps the face, such as measuring the distance between certain features, to create a ‘numerical expression’ for an individual.
This can then be quickly compared to large databases to try to find a match from faces that have already been mapped.
A ‘named, contactable’ officer will be assigned to handle reports of crimes in every neighbourhood in England and Wales.
The Home Secretary said: ‘Neighbourhood policing has been decimated over the last 15 years, but through our Plan for Change we are turning the corner, starting with town and city centres.
‘Within the next year, we will have 3,000 new neighbourhood officers and PCSOs in place, which is a big shift. We also want them to have more powers to tackle off-road bikes, shop theft, street theft and other crimes that have blighted some of our town and city centres, so everyone can feel safe in their own town.’
Some Londoners have welcomed the introduction of the surveillance vans in Croydon, where the UK’s first, permanent camera was installed on a lampost.
Shannon Kirwin, 20, who helps run her family’s food van, Old Skool Food, said she welcomed the crime reduction after seeing ‘gangs just pull out weapons on each other right in front of me.’
‘But all the ones who are committing crimes are wearing balaclavas and face coverings, is there even any point to the cameras if they can’t see through that,’ she added.

An alleged killer took a zip wire day trip to Brighton with an elderly couple before killing them, a court heard.
Yostin Andres Mosquera, 35, is accused of killing Albert Alfonso, 62, on camera after striking Albert’s partner, Paul Longworth, 71, with a hammer.
Mosquera is alleged to have attacked the couple in their flat in Scotts Road, Shepherd’s Bush, west London, on July 8 last year.
He then wheeled their dismembered heads in a suitcase before putting them in a chest freezer, jurors heard.
Other parts of their bodies were found in two suitcases on Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge two days later.
Mosquera denies murdering Albert, a swimming instructor, but admits to manslaughter. He denies murdering Paul, a retired handyman, Woolwich Crown Court heard.

Mosquera, a porn star living in Colombia, met Albert online in 2023 while using usernames such as ‘iamblackmaster’ and ‘mrd-k20cm’.
He flew from Colombia to Heathrow on June 6 to participate in sex acts with Albert, who picked him up at the airport, the court was told.
On June 29, CCTV captured Mosquera, Albert and Paul leaving their flat to go on a day trip to Brighton.
Jurors were shown a video of Mosquera going down a zip wire across the beach. The clip, filmed by the zip wire company, was set to piano music.
Less than two weeks later, on July 8, Alfonso was seen on a security camera leaving the flat at 9.14am on his bike to cycle to the West Acton gym where he worked.
He returned to the flat sometime before 1pm, according to the footage reviewed by police.

The court heard earlier that ‘the killing took place while he and Mr Alfonso were having sex and the sex and the killing were recorded on film’, said Deanna Heer KC, prosecuting.
Albert was killed at about 10.15pm in his living room, the court heard. The video showed the defendant ‘cutting’ Albert’s throat.
Ms Heer said: ‘What is striking, the prosecution say, when you watch the footage, is just how calm and in control the defendant remains throughout.’
The prosecutor told jurors that the defendant set about ‘dismembering them’ before ‘transferring some of their remains to Bristol in an attempt, the prosecution say, to dispose of them at the Clifton Suspension Bridge’.
Mosquera travelled to Bristol on July 10 holding a red suitcase and, when a cyclist questioned what was inside it, he said it contained car parts.
Ms Heer said: ‘That was a lie. In fact, the suitcases contained the decapitated and dismembered bodies of Paul Longworth and Albert Alfonso.’
Police discovered the severed heads in a chest freezer in the couple’s flat. Mosquera was arrested on July 13, found sitting on a bench outside Bristol Temple Meads railway station.
The trial continues.

A tourist could be fined up to €200,000 (£168,000) for throwing a large rock down a gorge in a popular hiking area.
The young man, who has not been named, was filmed lifting a rock larger than his head up to shoulder-height before lobbing it off a moutainside path in Spain’s Picos de Europa national park.
A loud crash was heard as it struck the ground seconds later.
The video was shared on social media, where users tore into the man for putting other people in danger.
Some claiming to have knowledge of the area said there is an ‘alternative path’ below the trail and that the bottom of the gorge is used by farmers.
The man’s nationality is not clear, although he and the person filming the video could be heard speaking Spanish.
Spain’s Guardia Civil police force said it is investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘This stunt could cost you dearly.
‘Throwing this rock could land this person with a fine ranging from €5,001 to €200,000.
‘Why? Because disturbing the environment in the Picos de Europa National Park is classed as a very serious offence.’
Around 300,000 people hike the Cares Trail, where the incident was filmed, ever year, while the wider park received around 2 million annual visitors.

Holidaymakers looking forward to a summer break in Corfu ended up miles away in Bologna after a ‘fight on board got out of hand’.
Two ‘disruptive passengers’ had to be hauled off the Ryanair flight after a bust-up broke out.
The plane was due to arrive in Corfu at 10.40pm local time after leaving Manchester Airport at 5.30pm.
Things turned prickly when two passengers were sitting apart, then moved to be seated together.
A fight erupted and the crew had to call for assistance, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Passengers were removed from the plane in Bologna, Italy.

Footage shows a woman being dragged off the plane by officers.
She can be seen pulling away from Italian police as they drag her off the runway.
Tourists were then able to continue their journey to Corfu not long after.
A spokesperson for Ryanair said: ‘This flight from Manchester to Corfu (29 Apr) was forced to divert to Bologna after two passengers became disruptive onboard.

‘Crew called ahead for police assistance, who met the aircraft upon landing at Bologna and removed these two disruptive passengers before this flight continued to Corfu later that same night.
‘Ryanair has a strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour, ensuring that all passengers and crew travel in a safe and respectful environment, without unnecessary disruption.’

This is the moment a man is seen smiling on a zipline while 26 people are shot dead below him in a terror attack.
Footage shows the tourist being launched by the Zipline operator, who says ‘Allahu Akbar’ three times as a militant group opened fire on visitors at a popular tourist spot in Indian-controlled Kashmir last week.
But the tourist does not appear to be aware of what is going on and smiles and films the scenery around him as he takes off along the Zipline.
Additional gunfire can be heard in the background as people are seen falling to the ground after being struck by bullets while trying to flee.
The man filming does not appear to realise what is happening as later footage shows him crossing the area where the terror attack took place.

One witness said: ‘My husband was shot in the head while seven others were also injured in the attack.’
Tourist Asavari Jagdale revealed how a gunman came into the tent which her family were hiding in and shooting all of her male relatives.
Due to the area only being accessible by horseback, locals rushed to help with emergency efforts and transport the injured on ponies.
He said: ‘I saw people crying, screaming, just lying in the aftermath of the attack. There were children, women, men, everyone.

‘It was a massive trauma. I did not sleep all night.’
One witness said: ‘I cannot say how many, but the militants came out of the forest near an open small meadow and started firing.’
He added the gunfire was ‘like a storm’ and the gunmen ‘very clearly spared women and kept shooting at men’.
