Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has told Donald Trump his country ‘will never be for sale’ while sitting beside him in the Oval Office.
The US President has made repeated threats to take over control of Canada since he returned to office in January, saying he wished to turn it into the ’51st state’.
His comments were a top issue in the recent snap election which led to a victory for Carney’s Liberal party, just a few months after they were trailing in the polls to the right-wing Conservatives.
Since replacing Justin Trudeau as the Canadian leader earlier this year, the former banker has made it explicit that he will not allow a US takeover to happen.
Unsurprisingly, the topic was quickly raised by journalists when Carney met Trump for the first time at the White House this afternoon.
The President said he ‘still believes’ the arrangement would benefit Canadians, but ‘it takes two to tango’.
Carney responded: ‘As you know, from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale.
‘We’re sitting in one right now. You know, Buckingham Palace, where you’ve visited as well.
‘And having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign in the last several months, it’s not for sale. It won’t be for sale, ever.’
Trump appeared to take the rebuke without offence, repeating ‘it’s true’ as the Prime Minister spoke about his experience in selling property, but he followed up by saying: ‘Never say never, never say never.’
Carney appeared to struggle to speak over the shouting journalists in the Oval Office, but said again before the end of the meeting: ‘Respectfully, Canadians’ views on this is not going to change, on the 51st state.’
The encounter showed no sign of descending into a bitter argument, like the infamous moment between Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this year.
Trump referenced that explosive meeting while speaking to the press beside Carney, saying: ‘This is very friendly.
‘This is not going to be like, we had another little blow-up with somebody else, that was much different. This is a very friendly conversation.’
